Artist Statement
John Bewlay is an artist who works in black and white photography. He uses a medium
format camera for most of his photographs and all of his prints are created in his darkroom. "I
love working in the darkroom. The magic of seeing an image appear and being able to
manipulate the image any way I want is both awesome and empowering."
All of john's nudes are created in the studio and he exclusively uses models that have
beautiful shape yet imperfect bodies. "A friend of mine has been modeling for me for quite a
while. She has a very beautiful body shape. However, her body isn't perfect by societal
standards. I guess I want to challenge the standards of beauty. Perfection and beauty don't
go hand in hand. Perfection doesn't exist but beauty does. It's everywhere."
John's studio technique has evolved into something simple and focused. He uses one or two
hot lights and he prefers to keep the backdrops monochromatic. "I like simplicity because it
keeps the viewer focused on the subject and it creates a very contrasty photograph. I love it
when the transition from light to shadow is almost instantaneous."
John's influences have mainly been sculptors and painters. "Photographers tend to use too
much light and they try to show every little detail in their pictures. The beauty of a Monet
painting is in its simple shapes and forms. The beauty of a Rodin sculpture is in it's simplicity
of subject matter."
John Bewlay currently resides in Georgia. His works have been displayed in New York,
Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia.
